CPSC announced 212 HVAC recalls from January 2000 to 2 November 2026, covering 37.0 million units sold in the US, by our coding of the CPSC Recalls API. That is about eight HVAC recalls and 1.4 million units a year. CPSC names fire or carbon monoxide as a hazard in 89.6% of them.
How many HVAC recalls are there? About eight a year, and the count is drifting down
HVAC recalls are a small and steady slice of CPSC's work: 212 recalls in nearly 27 years, never more than 15 in a year.
HVAC recall (as counted here): An HVAC recall here is a CPSC recall notice whose main product is a furnace, boiler, central air conditioner, heat pump, packaged or ductless unit, PTAC or through-the-wall unit, window, room or portable air conditioner, evaporative cooler, dehumidifier, portable space heater, fixed wall, baseboard, unit or garage heater, installed ventilation or air-cleaning equipment, or a thermostat, sensor or control. Units are US units as stated in the notice, not units that failed or were returned.
CPSC announced 212 HVAC recalls from 1 January 2000 to 2 November 2026, plus 9 notices that only reannounced an earlier recall (CPSC Recalls API, our coding). The busiest years were 2007 and 2014, with 15 recalls each. The quietest full year was 2000, with 2.

Averaged by period, HVAC recalls fell from 8.9 a year in 2000 to 2008 to 7.8 in 2009 to 2017 and 6.8 in 2018 to 2025. Removing portable space heaters gives 6.2, 5.4 and 5.0 a year. HVAC's share of all CPSC recall notices slipped from 3.0% to 2.3% over the same periods, so the decline is not only a product of CPSC posting fewer recalls.

For an HVAC company, the base rate matters more than any single headline: a recall touching the equipment a contractor installs (furnaces, boilers, central units, PTACs, controls) happens a handful of times a year nationally, not every week.

Dehumidifiers and space heaters, not furnaces, supply most recalled units
Counted by units, HVAC recalls are dominated by low-cost plug-in appliances sold at retail; installed heating and cooling equipment is recalled often but in small batches.
Dehumidifiers account for 12.1 million recalled US units since 2000 (32.7% of the HVAC total) from only 13 recalls. Portable space heaters add 11.06 million units from 62 recalls. Boilers, the second most frequent category with 45 recalls, total only 379,163 units.

Units per year are lumpy. The average from 2000 to 2025 is 1.4 million US units, but the median year is 854,471, and annual totals range from 44,500 in 2003 to 4,677,379 in 2025. One large retail recall can move a year by millions.

Ten recalls hold more than half of all units recalled since 2000
The 10 largest HVAC recalls since 2000 cover 20.46 million US units, 55.2% of the 37.0 million total. Seven are dehumidifiers or portable space heaters.

Two of the ten are from 2025: about 2.9 million electric motors for gable and roof-mounted attic fans distributed by Air Vent (fire hazard), and about 1.7 million Midea U and U+ window air conditioners, recalled for a mold exposure risk rather than fire. The Midea notice is one of only three HVAC recalls since 2000 whose stated hazard is none of fire, carbon monoxide, shock or burns.
The largest recall in each category is listed below. For furnaces the top entry is a component: about 298,300 evaporator coil drain pans installed with gas furnaces (Goodman, November 2021). The largest recall of whole furnaces is York's 2004 recall of about 226,000 gas furnaces for manufactured homes.

Nine in ten HVAC recalls name fire or carbon monoxide
Fire is named in 73.6% of HVAC recalls and carbon monoxide in 18.4%; together they appear in 89.6%. Carbon monoxide has grown as a share since 2018.
We coded each recall for the hazards named in CPSC's title and hazard text. Of 212 HVAC recalls, 156 name fire, 39 name carbon monoxide, 17 name shock or electrocution and 51 name burns or scalds; a recall can name several. 190 name fire or carbon monoxide, which is 89.6%. Without portable space heaters the share is 90.0%, so heaters do not drive the result.

Carbon monoxide recalls come almost entirely from fuel-burning central heat: 36 of the 39 involve boilers or furnaces, and 33 of the 45 boiler recalls cite CO. The CO share fell to 7.1% of HVAC recalls in 2009 to 2017 and rose to 31.5% in 2018 to 2025: 17 CO-citing recalls in those eight years, 15 of them boilers. Death statistics are outside this report; see our separate research on carbon monoxide deaths from heating systems.
Recalls of installed equipment are small, and the fix usually goes through a technician
Contractor-installed equipment accounts for 129 of the 212 recalls but only 11.5 million of the 37.0 million units, and its remedies are mostly repairs.
| Group | Recalls 2000 to 2026 | US units recalled | Median US units per recall | Cite fire or CO (%) | Cite carbon monoxide (%) | Remedy text names a technician, contractor, dealer or installer (%) | Recalls 2010 to 2026 with a coded remedy | Remedy includes repair (%) | Remedy includes refund (%) |

Contractor-installed equipment: furnaces, boilers, central AC, heat pumps and packaged units, PTAC and through-the-wall units, fixed room heaters, installed ventilation and air cleaning, thermostats and controls. Plug-in and retail: portable space heaters, dehumidifiers, window and portable air conditioners, evaporative coolers. Remedy options are a CPSC field filled from 2010 on.
Source: [1] U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
The median installed-equipment recall covers 6,180 US units, against 70,500 for plug-in appliances. 29% of installed-equipment recalls cite carbon monoxide, against 2% for plug-in appliances.
The remedy differs too. CPSC's remedy field, filled from 2010 on, shows a repair in 77% of the 70 installed-equipment recalls that carry it, against 12% of 51 plug-in recalls; plug-in recalls mostly offer a refund (71%). Across all years, 37% of installed-equipment recall notices name a technician, contractor, dealer or installer in the remedy text, and none of the plug-in notices do.
For an HVAC company this is the part of the record that becomes work: in-home repairs, inspections and part swaps arranged through the manufacturer. Recalls of the units a company installed are also something a buyer reviewing that company's install history may ask about. Our main guide to selling an HVAC business covers the sale process itself; this page only counts recalls.

What 2025 and 2026 added to the record
2025 brought the most recalled units of any year since 2000; 2026 has been quieter in units but busy for room and through-the-wall air conditioners.

Key findings
- CPSC announced 212 HVAC recalls between 1 January 2000 and 2 November 2026, excluding 9 reannouncements (CPSC Recalls API, our coding).[1]
- Those 212 HVAC recalls cover 37.0 million US units as stated in the notices, about 1.4 million units a year from 2000 to 2025.[1]
- The median year from 2000 to 2025 saw 854,471 US units recalled, because a handful of very large recalls lift the average.[1]
- HVAC recalls averaged 8.9 a year in 2000 to 2008, 7.8 in 2009 to 2017 and 6.8 in 2018 to 2025 (US, CPSC).[1]
- HVAC products made up 3.0% of all CPSC recall notices in 2000 to 2008 and 2.3% in 2018 to 2025.[1]
- 89.6% of HVAC recalls since 2000 (190 of 212) name fire or carbon monoxide as a hazard in CPSC's title or hazard text.[1]
- The share of HVAC recalls citing carbon monoxide rose from 7.1% in 2009 to 2017 to 31.5% in 2018 to 2025.[1]
- 33 of the 45 boiler recalls since 2000 cite carbon monoxide, and boilers and furnaces account for 36 of the 39 CO-related HVAC recalls.[1]
- Dehumidifiers account for 12.1 million recalled US units, 32.7% of all HVAC units recalled since 2000, from only 13 recalls.[1][4][7][8][11]
- The 10 largest HVAC recalls since 2000 hold 20.46 million US units, 55.2% of the total.[1]
- The largest single HVAC recall since 2000 is Midea's November 2016 dehumidifier recall: about 3.4 million US units plus 850,000 sold in Canada.[4]
- The largest recall of installed central equipment is Goodman's 2004 recall of about 875,000 packaged terminal air conditioners and heat pumps.[14]
- 2025 was the largest year for recalled HVAC units since at least 2000, at 4.68 million US units across 9 recalls.[1][5][10]
- Recalls of contractor-installed equipment have a median of 6,180 US units, against 70,500 for plug-in appliances.[1]
- Since 2010, 77% of installed-equipment recalls with a coded remedy offer a repair, while 71% of plug-in appliance recalls offer a refund.[1]
Rankings and ratios we derived
HVAC recalls and units, 2000 to 2 November 2026
FormulaRecalls = in-scope CPSC notices minus reannouncements. Units = sum of US units per notice, with 0 for reannouncements and restated units removed.
Inputs: fact rows 1 to 28 (all CPSC notices by year); tables/registry.csv (221 coded notices); derived d_scope, d_recalls, d_units (fact sheet rows)
Result: 212 recalls; 37,046,100 US units (37.0 million); 150 recalls and 25,985,718 units without portable space heaters
About eight HVAC recalls and 1.4 million units a year from 2000 to 2025.
Limitations: Scope coding is our own; units are firm-stated estimates and include components such as motors, valves and drain pans.
Share of HVAC recalls citing fire or carbon monoxide (signature figure)
Formularecalls whose CPSC title or hazard text names fire or carbon monoxide / all HVAC recalls x 100
Inputs: tables/registry.csv hazard flags; derived d_fireco, d_fireco_nps (fact sheet rows)
Result: 190 of 212 = 89.6%; 135 of 150 = 90.0% without portable space heaters
Fire and CO dominate HVAC recalls whether or not space heaters are counted.
Limitations: Keyword coding of CPSC text, with three hand fixes for older notices that describe ignition without the word fire.
Units recalled per year and the 2025 record
Formulasum of US units by calendar year of recall date; average = 2000 to 2025 total / 26; median of the 26 yearly totals
Inputs: tables/t1_recalls_by_year.csv; derived d_avg_units, d_med_units, d_2025 (fact sheet rows)
Result: average 1.4 million a year; median 854,471; 2025 = 4,677,379, the highest of 26 full years
A typical year sees under a million HVAC units recalled; 2025 was unusual because of two large recalls.
Limitations: One recall can exceed a typical year, so averages swing; 2026 is partial.
Is the rate changing? Period averages and CO share
Formularecalls per year and units per year for 2000 to 2008, 2009 to 2017, 2018 to 2025; CO share = CO-coded recalls / recalls x 100
Inputs: tables/t3_periods.csv; derived d_rate_A to C, d_coshare_A to C (fact sheet rows)
Result: 8.9, 7.8, 6.8 recalls a year; CO share 20.0%, 7.1%, 31.5%
Fewer HVAC recalls, a stable unit volume and a rising share involving carbon monoxide.
Limitations: Small counts per period (54 to 80 recalls), so a few recalls move the shares.
Installed equipment versus plug-in appliances
Formulamedian US units per recall; share of remedy options including Repair or Refund (2010 to 2026); share of remedy texts naming a technician, contractor, dealer or installer
Inputs: tables/t5_installed_vs_plugin.csv (fact sheet rows)
Result: median 6,180 vs 70,500 units; repair 77% vs 12%; refund 6% vs 71%; technician named 37% vs 0%
Installed-equipment recalls are small and usually fixed in place, which routes the work through the trade.
Limitations: Remedy options field is empty before 2010; the technician keyword search misses remedies that describe service without those words.

Data quality and exclusions
- 8,358 CPSC records screened; 8,021 removed by the keyword screen as non-HVAC products.
- 337 candidates reviewed; 116 coded out of scope (24 water heaters kept as a reference row; the rest pool, spa, aquarium and sauna heaters, hearth products, outdoor and camping heaters, personal heating products, fuel containers, service tools, gas line valves and screen false positives such as home theater systems).
- 9 reannouncements kept in the notice count but removed from recall and unit totals.
- 1 duplicate notice (Siebe damper actuators, published under two recall numbers on the same day) counted once.
- 2 notices adjusted for units restated from earlier recalls (16065 counted as 100,000 new units; 22193 as 0).
- 1 unit string with a stray space (24018, 'About 17, 370') read as 17,370; 1 Canada figure (24080) taken from the recall page (210) rather than the API (12).
- 3 older notices hand-flagged for fire where the hazard text describes ignition or smoking without the word fire.
Methodology
Source and selection. We downloaded every recall record in the CPSC Recalls API (the SaferProducts.gov REST web service that feeds cpsc.gov recall pages) with a recall date from 1 January 2000 to 2 November 2026: 27 yearly JSON files, 8,358 records. CPSC jurisdiction covers consumer products; vehicles, food and drugs are recalled by other agencies and are not here.
Screening and coding. A keyword screen of titles, product names and CPSC product types (furnace, boiler, air conditioner, heat pump, thermostat, dehumidifier, heater, ventilation and related terms), plus 12 notices found by reading descriptions, gave 337 candidates. Each candidate was assigned one primary category by ordered rules, with 80 hand overrides checked against the recall description (for example, PTACs titled only as heating and cooling units). 116 candidates were out of scope: water heaters (kept as a reference row), pool and spa heaters, hearth products, patio and camping heaters, personal heating products, fuel containers and false matches such as home theater systems.
Counting rules. A recall is a notice that is not a reannouncement; expansions that add units count. Units are the US units in the notice's units field; Canada units are recorded separately where the notice states them. Reannouncements count 0 units, and two notices that restate earlier units were adjusted (Carrier PTAC December 2015: 285,000 includes 185,000 recalled in 2007, so 100,000 new; Daikin drain pans July 2022 restates the 298,300 of November 2021). One notice published twice under two numbers (Siebe damper actuators, October 2002) is counted once. Years are calendar years of the recall date; CPSC's recall numbers and URLs use its fiscal year, so an October 2026 recall carries a 2027 path.
Hazards. Each recall is flagged for fire, carbon monoxide, shock or electrocution, burn or scald and explosion when the CPSC title or hazard text names them, using word-boundary matching so that gas-fired and burner do not count as fire or burn. Three older notices that describe ignition without the word fire were flagged by hand. A recall can carry several flags.
Conflicts. Where the API and the recall page differ, the recall page wins (one case: Canada units in recall 24080). Where both carry a typing error (recall 24018 reads 'About 17, 370'), we read it as 17,370 and say so. Large recalls cited by name were checked against the saved cpsc.gov page.
